Vincent Scotto, chef/owner of Gonzo in Greenwich Village at 140 West 13 Street, will offer a four course prix fixe tasting menu at $60 per person, Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24, celebrating the Night of the Seven Fishes, a traditional Italian holiday observance.

Zagat-Rated Restaurants and Vendors Offer a Feast of Opportunities
December 11, 2006– Whether you plan to prepare La Vigilia, the traditional Italian Christmas Eve dinner, at home, or if the only thing you want to make for the Feast of the Seven Fishes is reservations, New Yorkers have plenty of options this year.
For those who don’t have the kitchen space, the cooking skills or simply the time to prepare a meal with at least seven courses, dining out is a nice option. Fortunately there are several Zagat-rated restaurants that are planning to make this holiday feast for you.
The Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn is home to Saul, a New American restaurant that will be offering it’s take on the Feast by serving a seven-course tasting menu ($85, 718-935-9844). Patsy's is offering a spread with dishes such as shrimp fra diavolo and clams posillipo from the 17th through the 24th ($49; 212-247-3491); Gusto is serving a full rendition of the feast from 5:30–10 PM ($125 per person, includes three wine pairings; 212-924-8000). Gonzo is featuring a four-course prix fixe menu with a pasta course and a choice of entrees such as stuffed calamari and bacala stew (5–10:30 PM; $60 per person; 212-645-4606).
Christmas Eve in Central Park isn’t a far-fetched option either. San Domenico, Tony May’s modern Italian restaurant on Central Park South will be serving both an a la carte and prix fixe menu in honor of the Feast. Chef Odette Fada will be cooking the four-course, Southern Italian fish-focused prix fixe menu ($75; 212-265-5959) the entire week leading up to and including Christmas Eve as well as the day after Christmas.
Mario Batali will also be celebrating the Feast at several of his restaurants including prix fixe menus at Babbo (212-777-0303), Esca (212-564-7272) and Lupa ($75; 212-982-5089) as well as an all fish, seven-course tasting menu at Del Posto ($125; 212-497-8090).
I Trulli in Gramercy will also be serving the traditional meal in a seven-course prix fixe menu ($75; 212-481-7372) that will have all seven fish represented. And lastly, Barbuto, Jonathan Waxman’s Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village, will also be serving the Feast on Christmas Eve. The menu has not yet been finalized (212-924-9700).
For those who plan on cooking the meal at home, Zagat Survey’s 2007 New York City Marketplace guide features several businesses that can provide you with all of the goods you will need. Vino (212-725-6058), a wine shop selling regional Italian wines owned by the same people that own I Trulli, will help pick out a wine for each course of your meal.
DiPalo’s (212-226-1033) on Grand St.in Little Italy offers newly pressed (first harvest) olive oils, Calabrian figs, and specialty, Italian cheeses. Panettone and Panforte, variations of specialty bread, can be purchased at Villabate Pasticceria & Bakery (718-331-8430) in Bensonhurst and traditional loaves like pane Pugliese can be bought at Sullivan Street Bakery (212-265-5580). Torrone, the traditional Italian nougat candy can be found at BuonItalia (212-633-9090) in the Chelsea Market.
And as for the fish, several places are stocked and ready to meet your needs. Gramercy Fish (212-213-5557) will be offering all traditional seafood items, including cod and shrimp. They will also offer a store-prepared Frutte de Mar ($9.99/lb.). Wild Edibles (212-687-4255 or 212-213-8552), with locations in Grand Central and Murray Hill, will also be selling all seafood items necessary for the traditional feast including lobster, mussels, octopus, oysters and more.
