Shrink-wrapped with my August issue of Gourmet was a mini-zine supplement. There’s been a bit of posting and press on this already, but I’d like to add my two cents.
.
I liked it. A lot.
.
It’s a collection of writing from more than a dozen authors, a series of photos and an illustrated story. They’re loosely bound by the subject of food, in some cases the gastronomic factor is almost incidental to the actual theme. Not all the stories were 100% satisfying, but many were quite rich. I made note of many things. Watch out for the new novel by Nicole Mones. Find a Sailor Moon DVD. Dirty dishes can be attractive.
.
“Sunny-Side Up on the Love of Breakfast” written and illustrated by Maria Kalman, was perhaps my favorite. It is a perfect example of what paper can do that pixels cannot. Despite my obvious affection for digital/electronic/internet media, I love magazines and books.
.
I’ve been reading and re-reading it during those urban-waiting moments like the subway or elevator or lunch line. I carry it around in my purse, next to the leather-bound calendar I recently traded for my BlackBerry, going back to paper and pen. Now all I have to do is figure out how to blog in postcard format.
