If you’ve been remotely conscious of the food press these past few weeks, you know. Signori Batali, Bastianich and Ladner and Signora Bastianich have finally opened Del Posto. While the correct phone number has been published and operators are standing by, it will require some diligence to snag what is one of (if not the) toughest, most coveted reservation in Gotham right now. So here’s some intel for you to strategize:
There are 65 seats in the dining room and 50 in the balcony. Currently they’re accepting reservations one week out, meaning you can call today for a table on Friday the 30th. After January 2nd, they’ll open the book up to one month in advance, meaning you can call January 2nd for a table on February 2nd.
Theoretically they could crank out three turns of 115, or from 230 to345 covers a night – but they won’t. Controlled chaos is the name of the game, giving everyone a chance to come up to full speed. They’re going to hold the numbers down for a while. Trés intelligent for them. Trés difficile for you to get a table.
You could walk in and have a drink at the bar, but eating at one of the 40 lounge tables (with a separate menu) requires a reservation as well, with the same rez drill as in the dinning room.
So, while you spend your holiday speed dialing 212.497.8090, I give you the Del Posto menu to whet your appetite. It’s an ambitious menu of over 250 items. (The 30-odd plates I had there were good. Very good. Excellent actually, but that’s another story.) Given its length, I will post it in courses over the next few days. First up…antipasti.
